New Ham Orientation : 10-11AM : Waterloo Room

Jeff Schmidt N5MNW will host a New Ham Orientation for new hams on all kinds of things Ham-related.

He will also hold a short exam preparation in the private dining room at 11am to help those taking their exams later on at 12:30 in the Austin Room.

 

  • Overview of various Technical, Preparedness & Emergency Response Facets available as a Ham Radio Licensee
  • FAQs & "Heavy Mysteries".  i.e. "Why do certain Radio Waves have different ranges at night vs daytime?"
  • Internet & Ham Radio: your ­New- Social Media
  • Brief (15-20 min) Tech Exam Prep session, covering easy ways to remember basic things for the Tech exam.

Infected by the "Radio Bug" at an early age, listening to shortwave and local AM/FM radio, wondering what was so different between the distances covered.
 
1st licensed in 1988 as Novice KB5FSE, then as Technician N5MNW.
 
Endured the "Upgrade Trail" to General, Advanced, then "Slow Code" Extra (only got to 13wpm)
 
Wife- Lori KM5MQ passed her 20wpm Extra and outranked him for several years, but that's another story…). Lori & Jeff have been scheduling & teaching Amateur Radio Classes around Austin for the past two decades!

Jeff works in the Semiconductor Industry as an Engineering Technician, benefiting from the experience gained from "Hands-On"  experimentation.
